SWALIM facilitates an Information Management Training for Women in Garowe and Hargeisa

SWALIM conducted an information management training from 17 to 23 May 2015, in conjunction with the East Africa University in Garowe, and from 20 to 26 May, in conjunction with Golis University in Hargeisa, for women working in government ministries and agencies and local non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The training attracted a total of  41 participants  were drawn from the environment, agriculture, planning, women and labour ministries, disaster management agencies and  local NGOs.

The objective of this training was to empower women in the workplace to acquire the skills necessary to improve their efficiency and increase their chances of career advancement, as well as enable them to manage information better. Training was conducted by lecturers from the two universities with support from SWALIM. 

The training combined both classroom presentations and hands-on practical sessions. Participants were also given training material for further reference. The training covered the following areas:

  • Computer hardware and software
  • Features and functions of operating system
  • Features and functions of MS Office(Word, Excel and Power point)
  • Using Internet, Email and Social Media
  • Application scenarios and ministry case studies as per client request

At the end of each module, the trainees were examined on what they had covered and their test scores evaluated to determine their final score after completion of the course. Certificates were awarded to the trainees, who expressed appreciation for the opportunity provided by SWALIM. The FAO project covered all the logistical and training costs and were confident that the training will improve their work performance. They also requested similar training on information management in the future to develop the skills necessary to improve their efficiency and increase their chances of career advancement.
