SWALIM Conducts Open Source GIS Training in Hargeisa

With the aim of encouraging fully functioning institutions, SWALIM has been intensifying its capacity-building activities with relevant government line ministries and partner agencies by providing specialized training on “Open Source GIS and Land Cover Mapping” in Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Nine days of practical training with applied local examples and data on land cover were undertaken using the free open-source “Quantum GIS” software. Thirty-three participants – drawn from those who are directly involved or experienced with ICTs - were tapped for the sessions from Somaliland’s Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR), the National Environment Research and Disaster Preparedness Center (NERAD), the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), and the Ministry of Environment and Rural Development (MoERD). In addition, students from Gollis University, University of Florence (Italy), Gurmad Deegan University and some freelance students participated.

The trainees showed a lot of enthusiasm and willingness to learn, achieving all course objectives within the planned time. The trainees are now conversant with the use of Remote Sensing technology in land cover mapping as well as in conducting basic GIS mapping and analysis using the freely available Quantum GIS software.
