The land resources report and maps of Somalia form an important output of FAO-SWALIM project. The objective of this activity is to provide a strategic overview of the water and land resources. This approach ensures that water and land resources are developed and managed sustainably. The purpose of the Land resources of Somalia report is to: surmmarise and consolidate the main findings of the various land resources surveys and studies carried out in the three study area and to give a generalised assessment of the land resources of the whole country based on both existing data (notably on climate and soils) and on recent SWALIM data.

The main maps produced in this activity include:

  1. The Agro-Ecological Zones of Somalia
  2. Land suitability assessment maps
  3. Length Of growing period

Agro-ecological zones of Somalia:
This map was produced by SWALIM and includes land resource mapping units defined in terms of climate, landform and soils, and/or land cover having a specific range of potentials and constrinits. The Agro-ecological zones provide a foundation for physical land suitability assessment for various types of land use. 29 zones are included in this map. Copies of this map can be obtained from FAO-SWALIM on CD or DVD. Download Map (PDF, 891KB)

Length of growing period of Somalia:
Produced by FAO-SWALIM this map is based on the definition of 15 legth of growing period Zones. Copies of this map can be obtaining from FAO-SWALIM on CD or DVD. Download Map (PDF, 736KB)

Resource base units of Northern area of interest:
The resource base units (RBU) are land areas generally smaller than a region but considerably larger than a farm, with a definable combination of climate, relief, altitude edaphic conditions and natural vegetation. This map was produced by FAO-SWALIM and copies of it can be obtained from FAO-SWALIM on CD or DVD. Download Map (PDF, 241KB)

Resource base units of the Southern area of interest:
This map was produced by FAO-SWALIM in 2007 and copies can be obtained on CD or DVD. Download Map (PDF, 497KB)

Land suitability for rainfed agriculture: Sorghum in the Northern area of interest:
Land suitability assessments in Somalia were performed based on the resource base maps that were initially produced . These assessments were limited to few major crops, livestock and forestry. Land suitability for rainfed sorghum was produced by FAO SWALIM in 2007 and copies of the map can be obtained on CD or DVD. There is not much difference between the suitability of the four crop varieties studied (cowpeas, Maize, sorghum RS1 and sorghum RS2). Download Map (PDF, 823KB)
