As clearly reflected in the name of the project, activities focus on three main themes:
- Water resources
- Land resources
- Information management
Besides baseline information collection and processing all the three groups place emphasis on capacity building in Somali institutions to enable them to sustain the results after the project phases out.
Related to water resources, the project collects and disseminates nation-wide information on boreholes, wells, springs and other sub-surface water points. Analysis of surface water resources and floods is also within the mandates of the project. In respect to data collection SWALIM relies on its partners active in providing, maintaining and using any kind of water supply in Somalia. Besides the technical data the project also manages information about ongoing or planned activities related to water development.
The main outcome of the land related activities will be the physical land suitability assessment of the riverine areas in the South and the Dur-Dur/Gebiley catchments in the North. The landform, soil, land cover and land use maps together with the assessment will be of practical use for Somali administrations, donors and development organizations in making better established decisions.
All the data and results generated from these activities will be easier to use for SWALIM's clients if they are presented in a user-friendly way in an easily accessible form. This is assured by our Client Service Platform which includes the website, various CD-products, paper based information, a client terminal and personal assistance in our Nairobi office as well as in the liaison offices in Hargeisa and Garowe. The SWALIM Liaison Office in Southern Somalia is yet to be established. |
