APICULTURE (BEE KEEPING) IN ...... VILLAGE (NEAR EAST)

TARGET GROUP:

The project will support poor women and families in the village. 10 families will be involved in this activity.

BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION:

  • The poor living and nutrition conditions in the village.
  • Practical and traditional knowledge in such activities, and the willingness of women to be involved in this activity.
  • Availability of the trees which are considered as a source of Nectar and Vaccine Troches to feed the bees; such as:
    1. Acacia Origena Wood = A. Megrii Konig
    2. Ziziphus Spima - Christii Wild
    3. Fruit Trees, such as:
      • Pyruchs Commuris
      • Pruonus armeniacal
      • Pruonus persica

In addition to other trees and plants which will provide the bees with the necessary and adequate nutrition.

Project's Components:

  • Technical aspects represented in training on using modern hives, which will be implemented by the Water Harvest Project.

    • The site and Apiary
    • The Tools
    • The Classes
    • The beneficiaries.

Location:

.... Village, located in the Peri-Urban Area, Southwestern Part of the Capital. Population 632 inhabitants, mainly working in agriculture and livestock raising.

The area required to lay out beehives with Classes, and establishing a shade thereto is estimated at (13 x 13 Meters). Necessary survey, leveling and fencing with barbed wire is required to protect the bee classes and hives from animals.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Utilizing the existing resources and the women's efforts in order to improve the living conditions of the community.
  2. Encouraging the households participation in the agricultural development process.
  3. Increasing the production by adopting modern methods in apiculture activities.
  4. Strengthening the women's committee and encouraging the foundation of women's cooperative.

DURATION

12 months.

OUTPUTS

  • It is expected that each beehive will produce to pieces in each season.
  • Each production will be equivalent to 15 Kg.
  • Therefore, 15 x 2 = 30 Kg./Beehive.
  • Total number of beehives = 10 x 30 = 300
  • Total Production per Year = 300 x 6000 "Price per Kg." = XC1,800,000
  • Total Production in the two years = XC 1,800,000 x 2 = XC 3,600,000

Current Average Income Per Family = XC 60,000 per Year

Average Income Per Family from Honey Production per Year =

1,800,000 ÷ 10 = XC 180,000.

In addition to the opening session program, these campaigns, include a number of mass media "Television and Radio Broadcasting Activities (Flashes, Seminars, Reportage, and Film Screening), Publication of articles in journals and newspapers, organization of exhibitions, etc.

In parallel thereto, within the project's activities, the Extension, Community Participation, Women, Environment Divisions; and the external units will execute a number of activities, including:

Schools:

In coordination with the local concerned bodies, the project will arrange preparation and implementation of integrated enlightenment and mass media programmes, which include lectures, preparation of cartoon posters orientation, simple exhibitions, in addition to trees-plantation of the school. It is anticipated that the following activities will be implemented during the current year:

Lectures: Preparation and conducting a minimum of four lectures for the benefit of the male and female students in three schools covering the five regions of the project. The proposed lectures is expected to extend 60; and shall address four major subjects (Waste Water Uses, Management of Natural Resource, Significance of trees and means of care to be devoted, and desertification.

Exhibitions: In the occasion of tree plantation season, a local exhibition is prepared at the level of each school (15 exhibitions).

Trees-Plantation of Schools: Within the frame work of the same program, at least three (3) schools will be tree-planted, in each project region. Furthermore, similar programmes should be prepared and implemented at the level of universities, if condition permits.

Food stuff Industries: In addition, it is preferable that integrated programmes are prepared and implemented concerning uses of Waste Water in the process of establishing plantation sites. These programmes should include visit of factories, convene of meetings with the officials and tree-plantation activities in the aforementioned factories.

Mosques: The programme include preparation and presentation of 20 Friday Prayer Statements; an average of four statements in each region. Such statements should cover the aforementioned subjects. Furthermore, it is possible to plant some trees in the surroundings of the mosque, by using wash (Wudhoo) water.

Newsapers: Preparation and publication of at least 10 articles to address topics related with the goals, objectives and activities of the Project: such as land resources management, re-use of waste water, desertification, sustainable environmental management, rural women, community participation, integrated watershed management, master plans of rural communities; etc.

Radio Broadcasting Media: In coordination with the "Agriculture and Farmer Program and other divisions, the Extension and Community Participation Division, shall prepare and present a Radio Broadcast series every month, in parallel thereto, the units shall, in coordination with the local bodies, establish a local broadcasting station covering the activities of the project, which shall be presented once a month. The topics to be covered shall be the same topics which are published in the newspapers. The overall programme of the project, should contain at least 48 episodes. In addition 5 flashes shall be broadcasted, beside organizing 5 seminars and 5 reportage, on the occasion of trees plantation seasons, and other international days.

Television Media: On the occasions of the National and International Days, the following activities should be prepared and broadcasted; i.e. 5 Flashes, 5 Seminars, 5 Reportage, in addition to screening of 5 films. These activities should be within the framework of the Mass Media Framework for the National and International Days.

Strategy:

Two Women groups will be formed. Each group will work in one Apiary, whereby each Apiary will contain five beehives. Each Apiary will be allocated for five women. The beneficiaries will provide the land. The women will be trained on using modern beehives.

Each family must sign a written commitment, whereby they will undertake this task by devoting their attention and care to the Apiary and protect its tools.

Moreover, they must devote their best efforts to increase the production for at least two years period.

MONITORING AND REPORTS ARRANGEMENTS

Monitoring and supervision must be conducted by the Women's Committee in the village.

The Watershed and Waste Water Re-use in Peri Urban Areas, is operating in this village through the Women Branch of the Southern ... Unit, it will provide technical assistance through continuous training programmes, as well as supervision and follow up for implementation of the work. The implementing agency will be responsible for providing FAO with quarterly and final reports in an agreed format. The FAO representative will be responsible for monitoring the progress of the project and ensuring, through independent audit, that the funds are used correctly.
