Somalia Land Forms

The landform mapping of two areas of interest (AOI) in Somalia using Remote sensing and GIS is one of the activity outputs of FAO-SWALIM Project. The exercise was carried out at a semi-detailed scale of !:50000 to 1:100000 and currently constitutes the most recent detailed and consistent dataset over large portions of the Somalia territory. In this FAO-SWALIM exercise, a hierachical system of landform classification (geopedologic approach) was selected with three orders that integrate purely morphological (SOTER approach and geomorphometry) and morphogenetic attribution. Field validation of the northern AOI was carried out in May-June 2006.

Map showing landforms of Somalia:
This map was published by FAO-Africover project in 2003 at scale 1:3000000 by visual interpretation of digitally enhanced Landsat IM images (Bands 432) Landsat images from 1995 and 1998 were used. The land form classes were developed using the ITC and SOTER METHODS. Download Map (PDF, 70KB)

Relief of North Area of Interest:
This map was published by FAO-SWALIM project using three main datasets: satellite images, existing maps and datasets and grey literature. Satellite imagery included Landsat ETM+Aster, Ikonos and Quick Bird. The methology applied included material for the digital ferran analysis (DTA) visual image interpretation (IMI) and field survey FS. The field survey was conducted in the month of may-june 2006. Relief of South Area of Interest:
This map was published by FAO-SOMALIA project using three main datasets: satellite images, existing maps and datasets and grey literature satellite imagery included landsat ETM +,Aster, Ikonos and quickbirds) the methodology applied included materials for the digital tremars. Analysis (DTA) visual image interpretation (VIMI) and field survey (FS). The field survey was conducted in the months of May-June 2006. Download Map (PDF, 489KB)
