Somalia Water and Land Digital Library
After many years of civil strife in Somalia, almost all the available information has been lost. In an effort to rebuild a repository of water and land information for Somalia, SWALIM has embarked on the process of collecting and digitizing a wide range of documents that include project reports, water and land publications from previous studies. The end product of this process is an online Digital Library with searchable and downloadable water and land documents, specifically for Somalia.
The Library has been implemented using WebAGRIS, a multilingual web-based system for distributing data input, processing and disseminating agricultural bibliographic information. The system was developed by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Institute for Computer and Information Engineering (ICIE). It is based on common standards of data exchange. The SWALIM library has over 300 bibliographic entries linked to over 20GB of digitized documents.
These documents can be accessed as follows:
- Step 1: http://agris.faoswalim.org
- Step 2: Type a keyword e.g 'irrigation' and click 'search'
- Step 3: Documents that match your search words will be listed. Select a document to see more details
- Step 4: Click ‘Download’ to download the document
For users with slow internet connections, SWALIM provides these documents on DVD
and responds to requests made by email (swalim@fao.org) for specific documents.
